The stance that's turning heads

Victor Wembanyama is officially moving different. While the NBA has become increasingly tangled with the sports betting industry, the San Antonio Spurs’ 22-year-old cornerstone is standing on business. During a practice session on Thursday, when asked by San Antonio Express-News columnist Mike Finger if he’d ever sign a partnership deal with a betting firm, Wemby didn't hesitate.

"Absolutely not. I will never do that," Wembanyama said. He didn't hold back on the industry either, adding, "Honestly, I think it’s very sad to see some players promote it. Everybody does whatever they want, but without me."

The current landscape

It’s giving a major reality check to the rest of the league. Big-name stars like LeBron James have linked up with prediction markets like Polymarket, while Kevin Durant and Giannis Antetokounmpo have their own investments in the space. Between ads for FanDuel and DraftKings popping up on every broadcast and stream, gambling has been seamlessly woven into the fan experience. For Wembanyama to openly reject that bag—especially when it's become the status quo—is lowkey radical.

Why it matters

Real talk, shame has been hard to find in the industry lately, and most sports podcasts are essentially kept alive by gambling sponsors. By going on the record like this, Wembanyama has basically left a receipt for his future self. He’s made it clear that he isn’t interested in the "politically correct" route, previously speaking out on heavy topics like the killings of civilians by ICE agents. Whether this is a redemption arc after a tough playoff run or just his authentic self, it’s refreshing to see the league's next main character use his platform to push back against a trend that fans are highkey sick of.
