The Vibe Check on History

Ever wish you could turn your obsession with internet conspiracies into actual cash? A new startup called Verifact Markets just launched, and it’s basically a betting site—but for things that already happened. Real talk: it’s giving “philosophy majors at 3 AM,” but it’s real money on the line.

While platforms like Polymarket usually let you bet on whether the Bears will start Case Keenum or if it’ll rain tomorrow, Verifact is leaning into the chaos of the past. Think: betting on whether the moon landing was filmed on Earth or if a pandemic originated in a specific lab. They’re even letting people wager on whether State Farm purposefully dragged its feet on 2025 LA wildfire claims.

How it Works (Sort Of)

Here’s the catch: it’s not just a poll. You buy "true" or "false" contracts on historical "disputed" events. You can even submit "evidence" to help the house decide. If they think they’ve got the receipts, they resolve the market. If they’re still confused, they just pay out based on the odds at the time of expiration.

CEO Rodrigo Aquino says they have a "patent-pending" research system to settle these, but when asked how it actually works, he went full gatekeeper mode. It’s supposedly "multi-dimensional" and "mathematical," but highkey, the details are currently nonexistent. It’s giving major 'trust me bro' energy.

The Legal Loophole

Verifact is currently only open to people outside the U.S. because they aren't a licensed exchange here. However, backer Peter Wokwicz claims he bought a regulated exchange and plans to pull a total plot twist by rolling Verifact into it later. They’re operating on-chain using stablecoins, keeping it strictly crypto-native.

Why it matters

We’re currently living in a post-truth era where everyone has their own version of facts. Verifact thinks they can monetize the search for truth, but without a transparent way to actually verify reality, it’s just another high-stakes guessing game. It’s a W if you want to gamble, but an L if you’re looking for actual, unbiased history.
