The shift in status
If you’ve been grinding for United MileagePlus status, the goalposts just moved. Starting January 1, 2026, United is officially dumping the 'flight segment' metric. This means you can no longer hit elite status by combining a specific number of flights with your point total. From now on, it’s all about the points—specifically Premier qualifying points (PQPs).
What this costs you
For the entry-level Premier Silver tier, the path to status just got steeper. Previously, you could qualify with 15 flight segments and 5,000 points. Now, you’re forced to hit the 6,000-point threshold exclusively.
If you’re aiming for the top-tier Premier 1K status, it's a major L: the requirement is jumping from 28,000 points to 32,000.
How to stack your points
United is keeping the basics of the PQP grind intact. You’ll earn one PQP for every dollar spent on base fares and upgrades, plus points for every 100 miles redeemed for travel. If you’re a United Chase cardholder, your credit card spend still helps you climb the ladder. Regardless of your spending, you still need to complete at least four flights on United or United Express metal annually to qualify for anything.
Jarad Fisher, President of MileagePlus, described the old segment system as an 'old relic,' noting that the airline wants a 'consistent metric' across all customer activity. To soften the blow, the airline is introducing a 5% point 'head start' for existing status holders at the beginning of each year.
Why it matters
United is clearly prioritizing high-spenders over frequent-but-low-budget travelers. If you’re relying on short, cheap flights to pad your status, the vibes are officially off. This move aligns United with a wider industry trend of squeezing more revenue out of loyal flyers, so check your 2027 travel budget before you book.
