The United Kingdom is officially dominating the global television stage. The International Academy of Television Arts & Sciences revealed the nominees for this year’s International Emmys on Wednesday, and the UK topped the list with 14 total nominations.
Among the British highlights are the Disney+ drama "A Thousand Blows" and the Netflix comedy "Man vs. Baby." Brazil followed in the nomination count with nine nods, while Spain earned five.
The International Snub
While some shows celebrated their nominations, others were notably left out. Despite gaining massive traction in both the U.S. and internationally earlier this year, the Canadian series "Heated Rivalry" failed to secure a nomination. Although the show was submitted for consideration, it didn't make the final cut of 64 nominees across 16 categories.
The show had occupied an awkward space in the awards ecosystem. Because it was a Canadian commission without U.S. production partners, it was ineligible for the Television Academy’s Primetime Emmy Awards, but it ultimately missed out on the International Emmy recognition as well.
What to expect next
International Academy President and CEO Bruce L. Paisner emphasized the high level of competition this year, noting the "outstanding range of entries" from regions including South Korea, Argentina, India, and Germany. The final winners will be revealed during the 54th International Emmy Awards Gala, taking place in New York on Monday, November 23.
