The Vibe Check

President Trump is rolling out the red carpet for Chinese President Xi Jinping this week at the White House. It’s a huge deal—this is the first state visit from the Chinese leader in over a decade. While the pageantry is high, experts are lowkey keeping their expectations for actual policy changes pretty low.

The Itinerary

This isn't just a quick meeting. Trump is personally meeting Xi at Joint Base Andrews on Wednesday night—a rare move for a sitting president. Thursday is the main event, featuring a formal arrival ceremony on the South Lawn with nearly 500 military members, a B-2 bomber flyover, and a state dinner. First lady Melania Trump and Peng Liyuan will also be making rounds, including a visit to the Smithsonian National Museum of Asian Art.

The “Three Ts”

Behind all the pomp, there’s a massive list of tensions, often called the “Three Ts”: trade, tech, and Taiwan.

  • Trade: The two leaders need to decide if they’re extending the tariff truce that expires on Nov. 10. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent noted that China has floated a “bigger deal” than the current agreement, which saw some rare-earth mineral restrictions lifted. Meanwhile, U.S. Trade Representative Jamieson Greer mentioned a new “Board of Trade” could be in the works to protect certain consumer and agricultural goods from disputes.
  • Tech: The U.S. is currently trying to limit China’s access to the advanced semiconductor chips needed for AI. While there’s talk of a new “notification system” for AI incidents to increase transparency, it’s unclear if Trump is fully on board, as he’s focused on the U.S. winning the AI race.

Why it matters

Real talk: this meeting is largely a test of personal rapport between two leaders who hold a lot of power. With Trump valuing his relationship with Xi and both nations feeling suspicious of the other’s motives regarding global influence, this summit is less about instant fixes and more about navigating the fragile truce that keeps the global economy from spiraling. Don't expect any massive breakthroughs, but keep an eye on those trade tariffs—the outcome could definitely impact your wallet down the line.
