The move to on-chain assets

For a decade, crypto heads have been screaming that stocks, bonds, and credit belong on-chain. While we were busy building DeFi protocols and decentralized exchanges to move crypto around, the actual assets that matter—the ones in your traditional brokerage account—stayed off-chain. Now, that’s shifting.

In a massive 79-page report titled Breaking the Wall, research firm Citrini Research argues that we’re moving past the "solution in search of a problem" phase. Tokenizing assets like U.S. Treasuries isn't just about trading Nvidia at 3 a.m. on a Sunday. It’s about making financial assets act like software—collateral that flows across apps and settles instantly without manual oversight.

Following the money

Real talk: just recording a security on a new database is basically just fancy bookkeeping. Arthur Hayes, CIO of Maelstrom, pointed out that the real question is where the actual profit sits. Is it the infrastructure providers acting like toll booths? Or is it the distribution platforms like Coinbase and Robinhood that already have the users?

Jeff Dorman of Arca thinks the act of tokenizing will eventually become commoditized. The real value, he argues, hides in the activity after the asset is on-chain—lending, borrowing, and yield generation. That’s why platforms like Hyperliquid, Aave, and Aerodrome are highkey on the radar for long-term value.

The AI factor

But here is where the plot thickens: AI agents. Hayes predicts that future financial services will be run by software, not humans. Imagine an AI agent that monitors your portfolio and moves cash into higher yields or swaps collateral 24/7 without you lifting a finger. To do that, these agents need programmable, always-on assets—which is exactly what the crypto ecosystem has been building for years.

Why it matters

We are still super early, and as Christian Magoon from Amplify ETFs noted, today’s winners might not be tomorrow’s. While Grayscale’s Zach Pandl suggests betting on the base layers like Ethereum, Solana, and BNB Chain is the most direct play, nothing in this space is a guaranteed W. Always do your own research—none of this is financial advice, and the vibes in early-stage tech can change in a heartbeat.
