The Vibe Shift in Spanish TV
The industry is officially over the 'bigger is better' era. At the Iberseries & Platino Industria confab in Madrid, the big brains behind The Mediapro Studio companies—Globomedia, 100 Balas, Big Bang Media, Cimarrón Cine, and El Terrat—revealed their new playbook. Lowkey, they’re done chasing scale for no reason. Instead, they’re doubling down on raw talent and staying nimble to tell stories that actually slap.
Who’s Doing What
Globomedia is keeping it real with comedy, which director general Maria Jose Rodríguez says is literally in their DNA. Over at 100 Balas, director general Alejandro Flórez is prioritizing creator-driven fiction, like their thriller 'Death in Llanes.' He’s highkey betting that being 'too local' is actually a superpower, not a weakness. 'You shouldn’t be afraid of being local,' he noted.
Meanwhile, Big Bang Media is branching out from their live TV roots into heavy-hitter fiction, including new projects with author María Dueñas. Cimarrón Cine is leaning into a 'borderless' model, mixing creators from across five different countries to make projects work, while El Terrat is pivoting from their legendary comedy background to make their mark on the world of scripted drama.
Why it matters
In a world where we’re constantly scrolling through endless content, these studios are betting that authenticity is the only thing that’s going to keep people watching. They aren't trying to feed the algorithm; they're trying to create stories that live rent-free in our heads. It’s giving 'quality over quantity' energy, and honestly, we’re here for it.
