The main event

It’s officially Disrupt season. The doors to TechCrunch Disrupt opened today, and 20 startups have been selected to battle it out for the $100,000 prize and the iconic Disrupt Cup. We aren't talking about another round of 'AI wrapper' apps, either—this cohort is focused on turning the physical world into actionable data.

The overarching vibe this year is 'making the invisible measurable.' Whether it’s tracking biological clocks, simulating real-world outcomes for entire cities, or using AI to catch scam callers in the act, these founders are out here trying to automate the impossible.

The standout lineup

  • Space & Energy: We’ve got Longshot Space aiming to launch cargo for $50/kg via hydrogen-powered cannons (yes, really). Then there’s LNK Energies with compact reactors for hydrogen power, and Helix Carbon turning industrial waste into fossil fuel alternatives.
  • Health & Bio: Intero Biosystems is growing miniature human organs to speed up drug testing, while TimeTeller GmbH and Hiyd AI are digging deep into your biological clock and daily movement data to optimize your health. Mosqitter is also using sensor networks to predict mosquito-borne disease outbreaks.
  • AI & Data: Apate.ai is lowkey a hero for using AI bots to waste scammers' time and feed intelligence back to banks. Meanwhile, Laplace Intelligence is building agentic models to help cities prepare for 'counterfactual' futures, and IndustrialNext is teaching robots to handle high-precision, assembly-line heavy lifting.
  • The Rest: The list rounds out with hardware authentication (Veritas), wildlife collision prevention (Flox Intelligence), satellite compute optimization (Satlyt), cognitive performance scoring for athletes (NTangible), and several others tackling everything from lithium isotopes (Licube) to automated inheritance workflows (Prismm).

Why it matters

Real talk: most 'innovation' is just marketing fluff, but this group is actually tackling the complex, messy physical systems—like supply chains, biological health, and heavy industry—that usually break when you try to apply pure software to them. The finals go down this Thursday, October 15, when five semifinalists will compete for the crown. It’s giving 'the future is finally here' energy, and honestly, we’re here for it.
