The Investigation
The plot thickens in the investigation into the death of 29-year-old Tasia Fortune. Authorities in Jackson, Mississippi, have now taken a third person into custody. Eric Clark, 45, turned himself in on Friday and has been charged with murder.
This follows the earlier arrests of two other men, Earnest Lloyd Jr. and Jarques Ratliff, who are also facing murder charges. Both have reportedly pleaded not guilty and remain behind bars without bond. The Jackson Police Department (JPD) has made it clear they aren't done yet, stating they will keep digging "until all individuals believed to be involved are held accountable."
A Staged Scene
Real talk: the circumstances here are grim. Fortune, a mother of four, was found on August 3rd hanging from a tree behind a vacant home. However, investigators have officially confirmed that the scene was staged. Autopsy results suggest she had actually been dead for two to three days before her body was discovered at that location.
While police are keeping many details under wraps, JPD detective Samuel Dukes has stated that Fortune was killed elsewhere before being placed at the site. According to local reporting by WLBT, investigators allege there was a physical altercation between Lloyd and Fortune shortly before she died, with police accusing him of using a black cable cord in the incident.
Why it matters
The case has grabbed national attention, lowkey because of the brutal nature of the crime and the heavy weight of Mississippi’s history regarding racist violence. Fortune’s family, including her mother, Christy Spivey, has maintained from the start that she would not have taken her own life. As the JPD continues to interview witnesses—having already spoken to roughly 15 people—the community waits for more answers in a tragedy that has left many demanding justice.
