The end of app-switching?
Real talk: we spend our entire lives toggling between apps to get basic stuff done. Chinese startup StepFun is trying to change the meta with their new phone, the STEPX Neo. Instead of just adding a chatbot on top of Android or iOS, they built an entirely new operating system called Step AOS 1.0 from the ground up to let AI run the show.
How it hits different
Think of it like this: instead of opening a ride-hail app, typing in your destination, and clicking buttons, you just tell your phone where you want to go. The phone’s native AI agent, Amoo, handles the logistics for you. It’s built on a mix of Android, Linux, and real-time OS components, allowing it to break down phone functions like messaging and settings into small blocks that the AI can call directly.
There’s even a MiniLED screen on the back of the device that shows you what Amoo is working on in real-time. It uses the Model Context Protocol (MCP) to plug into nearly 100 platforms, including heavy hitters like Alipay, Tencent, and Didi. While the actual heavy lifting for payments and bookings still happens through those platforms, the AI is doing the legwork behind the scenes so you don't have to.
Under the hood
Founded in 2023 by former Microsoft vice president Jiang Daxin, StepFun isn't just playing with other people's tech. They’ve built their own LLM, Step 5 Preview, which can process up to 1 million tokens at once. For the smaller stuff, it runs a compact model right on the phone—sometimes even offline—so you aren't waiting on the cloud for simple tasks.
Why it matters
Pre-orders for the STEPX Neo started at 3,999 yuan (about $560). That price gets you the phone and 12 months of their "Token Plan," which includes 100 billion tokens per month. It’s a bold move to make the agent, not the app, the main character of your phone. Just remember, this is brand-new tech—keep your expectations grounded and don't go yolo-ing your savings on unproven hardware. This is not financial advice, just the latest tech tea.
