Sea life, not seafood

Stella McCartney is officially entering her ocean-preservation era. While Paris Fashion Week is usually all about the glitz, McCartney used her show at the British embassy to center a message that’s honestly pretty heavy: we’re at war with our oceans. With designs featuring dolphin graphics and Hokusai-inspired wave details, she’s making it clear that she’s Team Sea Life all the way. She even had legendary oceanographer Sylvia Earle deliver the show’s invite via video. Real talk, the vibe was a major pivot from the usual runway chaos.

The wool drama

Animal rights are taking center stage this season, and McCartney has been the main character of this conversation for 30 years. Following recent drama in NYC involving a Peta protester and the president of the fashion week’s governing body, the conversation around wool production has shifted from niche to high-key relevant. McCartney made it a point to clarify that there was zero wool on her runway this season. Instead, she’s leaning into science, using a lab-grown alternative called Brewed Protein developed with the Japanese firm Spiber.

McCartney isn’t saying shearing is inherently bad, but she’s calling out the industry for being deeply cruel. She noted that while she personally oversees her supply chain to ensure kindness, she feels like she’s out here policing the industry solo. It’s giving frustration, honestly.

Why it matters

McCartney’s insistence on sustainability is a direct challenge to the fashion industry’s status quo. By forcing a dialogue about what we wear versus what we consume—and highlighting the hypocrisy of admiring sea life while putting it on a dinner menu—she’s pushing for a world where fashion values-led gravitas over just pure razzmatazz.
