The Audiobook Era is Here

Real talk: Spotify is officially entering its bookworm era. The streaming giant announced Wednesday that it’s taking its audiobook game global, rolling the service out to all 750 million of its monthly active users across 180 countries by the end of 2026. It’s giving major expansion energy, and honestly, the vibes are immaculate for anyone trying to hit their reading goals while on a commute.

The Numbers Don't Lie

Spotify has been testing the waters for three years, starting in the U.S. and U.K. It’s lowkey been a massive success, with listening hours spiking 60% between 2024 and 2025. By mid-2025, they dropped the Audiobooks+ subscription—an extra $11.99 on top of that $12.99 premium fee—to double listening time from 15 to 30 hours a month. It’s clearly a W, as the company already has over 1 million users paying for the upgrade.

Why It’s Giving Main Character Energy

Spotify co-CEO Alex Norström pointed out that these users are "very valuable" because they stick around longer and spend more than the standard premium crowd. They’re also obsessed with the Page Match feature, which lets you switch from a physical book to the audio version right where you left off. Apparently, Page Match users are finishing books twice as fast, and two-thirds of them are under 35. Say less.

Spotify is also helping authors out with tools like "Spotify for Authors" and an AI voice-over feature powered by ElevenLabs. Global head of books Owen Smith noted, "We are creating healthy reading habits," and honestly, if it keeps us off our phones for five minutes, we’re here for it.

Why it matters

Spotify is successfully pivot-slapping its way into the publishing world. By targeting younger readers and making it easier than ever to finish a book, they aren't just selling music anymore—they're curating your entire aesthetic.
