Sonay Kartal is officially in her main character era. The 24-year-old just punched her ticket to her first-ever WTA 1000 final at the Wuhan Open, and the energy is unmatched. She took down former French Open champ Jelena Ostapenko in a nail-biting straight-sets victory, winning 7-6 (9), 7-6 (5).

The grind behind the win

Kartal didn’t have it easy. She had to fight back from behind in both sets and absolutely locked in to save six set points across the match. It’s giving resilience—especially considering she’s only playing in her second tour-level tournament since being sidelined for six months with a back injury.

Before this, she was ranked world No. 170 because of that time away, but she’s now the lowest-ranked player to ever hit a WTA 1000 final since the format dropped in 2009. Real talk, she’s been on a tear, taking out heavy hitters like Elina Svitolina, Jasmine Paolini, and Belinda Bencic.

“Mentally I think this is one of the best performances I’ve had in my career,” Kartal said.

Why it matters

This W is a massive level-up. Come Monday, Kartal is guaranteed to rocket into the world’s top 50, officially bumping Katie Boulter to become the new British No. 1. After her momentum stalled following last year’s Wimbledon breakthrough, this comeback is lowkey legendary.
