The science of the perfect pillow
Ever wonder why you wake up with a stiff neck? It’s giving… a bad pillow choice. According to Dr. Chris McCarthy, an associate professor at the Manchester School of Physiotherapy, the secret to a good night's rest isn't about buying the trendiest gear, but understanding your own biology. Real talk: there is no "one-size-fits-all" pillow, and the marketing hype behind "orthopedic" or "ergonomic" pillows is honestly a bit sus.
Know your sleep style
McCarthy breaks down sleepers into three categories: side, back, and front. If you sleep on your stomach, you might want to switch it up. "Inevitably a muscle or ligament gets stretched and a bit irritated," says McCarthy. Lowkey, the best move for your spine health is to avoid front-sleeping altogether.
For side sleepers, the magic number is the width of your shoulders. A broader frame usually needs a thicker pillow, but your mattress matters too. If your mattress is soft, you sink in more, which means you need a thinner pillow to keep your spine straight.
Back sleepers should look for thickness based on the natural curve of their upper spine. As you age, that curve often increases, so you might need a bit more support than someone with a flatter back.
The "faffing about" method
Not sure if your current pillow is the problem? McCarthy recommends a DIY hack to test what you need. Place a folded towel under your pillow to adjust the height, or roll it up to mimic those "contoured" pillows to see if it actually helps your neck support. It’s a total W for anyone who doesn't want to drop a ton of cash just to experiment.
When it comes to fillings, it’s a trade-off. Feather and down are great for temperature control since they wick heat, but they tend to bunch up, leaving your neck in a weird kink by morning. Synthetic fibers like hollow fibre hold their shape better but might leave you feeling a bit warmer. Ultimately, McCarthy suggests taking advantage of trial periods before you commit to a major purchase. It’s personal, so make it work for you.
