Space goals
Real talk: stargazing is about to get a major upgrade in Shropshire. The Shropshire Astronomical Society (SAS) just got official approval to build a mini-observatory at a local village hall, and the vibes are high.
They aren't just setting up any old equipment. The group plans to move a dome and telescope formerly used by the Irish Rangers at the Tern Hill army base. They’ve been repping their spot at the Rodington Village Hall for 25 years, but this new addition is definitely a W for the community.
The build
The structure will be a curved, gloss-white fiberglass dome standing just under 2.7 meters (about 8 feet 9 inches) tall. While the local planners at Telford and Wrekin noted it’s a bit of an "unusual" look, they agreed it adds some visual interest to the site.
Society chairman Philip Osman said the dome will be the only publicly accessible observatory in the county. The goal is to get more people involved in astronomy and level up their outreach game. Stephen Szwajkun from the society noted, "It will be a first public astronomical observatory in the area and provide inspiration for the diverse residents of Telford and Wrekin."
Local council officials gave the project the thumbs up, confirming the site won't cause any extra noise or parking headaches. It’s a total move to boost community education, and honestly, we love to see it.
Why it matters
This project isn't just about cool space gear. By repurposing old military tech into a public-facing space, the SAS is making science more accessible to everyone, aiming to engage a whole new generation of space geeks.
