Jackson police confirmed that a second suspect has been arrested in connection with the death of 29-year-old Tasia Fortune. Earnest Lloyd Jr., 25, was taken into custody late Tuesday and appeared for a brief court hearing on Wednesday. This follows the arrest of 51-year-old Jarques Ratliff, who was detained in September on murder charges and is currently being held without bond after pleading not guilty.
Fortune’s body was discovered hanging behind an abandoned house in Jackson on August 3. While police have not released information regarding a motive or potential racial elements in the case, the circumstances have drawn significant public attention due to the history of lynchings in Mississippi. Police Chief RaShall Brackney previously noted that Ratliff had an "association" with Fortune, but further details have not been provided as the investigation remains ongoing.
Moving forward
Beyond the two arrests, officials have issued an arrest warrant for a third suspect, though the identity and role of that individual remain under wraps. Investigators stated that they expect to issue additional warrants as they continue to process evidence and interview witnesses.
Fortune, a Kentucky native and mother of four, had been living in Jackson for approximately ten years. Her mother, Christy Spivey, attended the hearing and expressed relief at the progress in the case. While seeking justice for her daughter, Spivey also acknowledged the impact on the families of the accused, stating, "My family is not the only family that this is affecting. I feel for them as well. The only difference is that mine can never come back."
