The situation
A literal mail truck was robbed in broad daylight in Sacramento’s College Glen neighborhood this past Tuesday, and the vibes are off. Around 2:30 p.m., a suspect rolled up in a gray SUV, popped the back of a postal truck, and dipped with trays of mail—all while a neighbor was watching. Now, everyone is wondering if the missing mail included ballots, which makes sense given that Sacramento County just sent them out. US Postal Inspector Jonathan Lanning straight up confirmed that ballots might have been swept up in the heist.
The real tea
Local resident Mary Brown said she was expecting ballots for her great-grandchildren but they never showed up, and she only figured out why after checking a neighborhood app. Real talk, the uncertainty about whether those votes will be counted has people panicked.
What this means for you
If you’re worried your ballot might be lost, don't spiral yet. Ken Casparis from the Sacramento County elections office said you can hit them up via phone or email to request a replacement. The county will only count the first valid ballot they receive with your signature, so don't stress about double-voting if you get a new one. The US Postal Inspection Service is so serious about this that they're offering a $100,000 reward for info leading to an arrest. If you know anything, call them at 1-877-876-2455, and definitely keep an eye on your ballot status through the California Secretary of State’s website.
Why it matters
Protecting the mail is a major W for election security, and when a heist like this happens right before Election Day, it creates total chaos for voters trying to cast their ballots.
