Five men were arrested Sunday near RAF Fairford in Gloucestershire, England, after police launched a major security response. The site is a key base for U.S. operations, including the 501st Combat Support Wing and the 420th Air Base Squadron.
Police were alerted to three suspicious vehicles heading toward the base around 12:45 a.m. Sunday. Armed officers tracked the group to the nearby village of Whelford. They were taken into custody on suspicion of violating the Explosives Act and preparation of a terrorist act.
The fallout
President Trump told reporters on Sunday that authorities had the suspects under watch. "We had them under investigation. They were looking to do big damage to our fort, and working with the British worked out great," Trump said.
UK counter-terrorism official Vicki Evans confirmed that a 400-meter cordon was set up while the British Army's bomb squad investigated the vehicles. Roughly 85 households in Whelford were evacuated as a precaution, with residents directed to a local leisure center.
