The Situation

Real talk, Rams fans: the news on Puka Nacua isn't great. Coach Sean McVay confirmed that our star WR isn't hitting the field for practice this Friday, and he’s officially listed as doubtful for the Sunday Night Football showdown against the Broncos. It’s giving déjà vu, as he missed all of practice last week too before sitting out the game against the Giants.

The Recovery Plan

Don’t stress too hard yet, though. Coach McVay dropped some alpha on his recovery, saying if Puka doesn’t suit up this Sunday, the plan is for him to be back for Week 4 against the Eagles, barring any setbacks. Puka is dealing with a hip injury, which he described as feeling “pre-hernia.” The team is playing it safe, which is a major W for his long-term health.

What This Changes

Nacua is a literal beast—he led the NFL with 129 catches and 1,715 yards last season. Without him, the offense looks different. Last week, Davante Adams absolutely ate, putting up 195 yards and two scores against the Giants. But now, he’s going up against a top-tier Broncos secondary led by Patrick Surtain, the 2024 Defensive Player of the Year. That's a serious test.

Look for the Rams to lean into their signature 12 or 13 personnel packages. They led the league in snaps with three or more tight ends last year and are keeping that trend alive this season. Tight end Terrance Ferguson is someone to keep an eye on to step up again.

Why it matters

Nacua is the key to unlocking the full playbook. When he’s on the field, the team averages 6.8 yards per play compared to just 5.0 when he’s sidelined. We need our main character back to really cook this season.
