Porsche pivots away from the blockchain

Looks like the vibes are off for Porsche’s crypto journey. The legendary automaker just announced it’s officially pulling the plug on its Web3 project and the 'Pioneers Circle' community. After kicking things off with high hopes back in 2022, the brand is calling it quits on the experiment less than four years later.

For those holding the bags, don't panic too hard—Porsche confirmed that your 911 NFTs aren't disappearing. They’re staying onchain, but the active support is vanishing. The brand plans to flip its Discord server into a read-only archive and the official project X account is going ghost. Real talk: the active community era is over.

The downfall of the 911 collection

This project had a rocky start from the jump. When it launched in January 2023, the plan was to drop 7,500 tokens. However, the community wasn't feeling the pricing or the lack of utility, leading Porsche to halt minting early at just 2,363 tokens.

Back when they first announced these plans, then-deputy chairman Lutz Meschke said the company was committed “for the long haul,” eyeing potential use cases in the metaverse and supply chains. Fast forward to today, and the trading volume tells a much sadder story. According to OpenSea, while the collection saw $20 million in all-time trading volume, it’s done a measly $38,000 in the last year and only around $2,900 in the last month. It’s giving 'abandoned project.'

Why it matters

Porsche’s retreat is a major L for the idea that every legacy brand needs a dedicated NFT strategy. It’s a sobering reminder that even massive brands struggle to maintain utility in the Web3 space once the initial hype dies down. Always remember: digital collectibles aren't a guaranteed moon mission, and this is definitely not financial advice.
