The breakdown

Real talk: Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth is officially on-chain. His latest annual financial disclosure, which just dropped via the Office of Government Ethics, confirms he’s holding Bitcoin in a Coinbase wallet.

Before you start checking your own bags, let's look at the numbers. The filing lists two separate entries for the Bitcoin holdings: one valued between $15,001 and $50,000, and another between $1,001 and $15,000. Because these forms only show ranges, we’re looking at a total somewhere between $16,000 and $65,000.

No panic selling here

Here’s the thing: Hegseth isn’t exactly flipping coins on the daily. There were zero transactions listed for his BTC during the 2025 reporting period, meaning he didn’t buy or sell any of that Bitcoin while in office this year. It’s a pretty low-key holding compared to his overall portfolio, which includes at least $3.1 million across cash, retirement funds, and his crypto.

He did, however, do a major portfolio rebalance shortly after taking office. In early 2025, he dumped a long list of individual stocks—including defense contractors like Lockheed Martin and Northrop Grumman, plus tech giants like Apple and Amazon—and shifted his focus toward index funds.

The context

Compared to his boss, Hegseth’s crypto stash is basically pocket change. President Donald Trump’s own disclosure from June showed a massive $50 million in Bitcoin and over $1.2 billion in earnings from his various crypto ventures, including that wild $635 million from his meme coin project.

Why it matters

While seeing a high-ranking official like the Secretary of Defense stacking sats is a sign of crypto's ongoing adoption, remember that this is just one piece of his financial puzzle. Always do your own research (DYOR)—nothing here is financial advice, and government ethics filings are meant for transparency, not trading signals.
