The setback

Denver Broncos fans, we have a problem. Superstar cornerback Patrick Surtain II went down with a non-contact ankle injury late in the second quarter against the San Francisco 49ers. It’s giving major bad vibes—he had to be helped off the field by teammates. He is officially listed as questionable to return, but he was notably absent from the field when the second half kicked off.

Why it matters

Real talk: this is a massive blow. Surtain is the backbone of the Broncos’ elite defense. He’s been a Pro Bowler for the last four seasons and took home the Defensive Player of the Year trophy in 2024. While he’s usually a total iron man—playing at least 16 games in four of his first five seasons—losing him changes the entire defensive scheme.

With Surtain sidelined, the depth chart is looking real thin. Denver is now forced to lean on Riley Moss, Ja'Quan McMillan, and Kris Abrams-Draine to hold down the secondary, alongside 2025 first-round pick Jahdae Barron. The game was locked in a 3-3 tie at the half, and how the team adjusts without their star CB will be the ultimate W/L test for the rest of the game.
