Imagine thinking you just pulled off the heist of the century, only to realize you actually just stole a literal ton of playground filler. That’s exactly the vibe for a group of thieves in Fremont, California, who recently targeted a warehouse belonging to the autonomous trucking startup PlusAI.
The botched heist
The thieves clearly saw the Nvidia branding on the trailers—a result of a partnership on self-driving tech—and probably thought they were about to secure a massive haul of high-end computer chips. They went through the trouble of breaking locks, attaching the trailers to their own rigs, and speeding off.
But the joke was on them. Inside those trailers, there wasn't a single circuit board. Instead, there was 40,000 pounds of ballast sand. PlusAI uses the sand to simulate the weight of heavy cargo while testing out their autonomous systems. The actual high-tech, expensive truck cabs? The thieves totally ignored them, leaving the real goods sitting right inside the warehouse.
How it all went down
The whole situation only came to light when a friend of a PlusAI employee spotted the trailers parked near an office in Newark. Thinking nothing of it, they shot a quick text to a company exec: “I have been proud of you for your adventure and success at PlusAI. Just saw two of your trucks near my work place! :)”
Talk about awkward. The trailers had been reported missing by workers that morning, and the sand had been dumped nearby by the time they were recovered. The thieves? They vanished into thin air, presumably feeling pretty salty about their 40,000-pound sand haul.
Why it matters
This is a classic case of main character energy gone wrong. It serves as a reminder that branding doesn’t always equal the payday you expect, and sometimes, the most sophisticated companies are just hauling sand around to get the job done.
