The Viral Stunt
Imagine it’s your birthday, you’re in Hawaii, and you decide that a little thing like a hurricane warning shouldn’t ruin your vibe. That was the energy Nuri Abdullah brought to Maui’s Waianapanapa State Park on Sept. 26. In a TikTok that went viral, the North Carolina resident was filmed walking right past a locked gate and multiple "BEACH AND HIKING TRAILS CLOSED" signs.
"You see this? Guess what. I don’t care about it. I’mma go down anyway," she said in the video, where she flexed the park's famous black sand and rocks for the camera.
The Real Risks
The park was locked down because of Hurricane Polo, which brought heavy rain, high winds, potential flash flooding, and dangerous surf. Andrew Laurence, a spokesperson for the Hawaii Department of Land and Natural Resources, didn’t mince words, telling Hawaii News Now that her stunt was straight-up trespassing. "She could have died before anybody could get to her," Laurence added, noting the rough surf seen in her own footage.
Why Locals Are Upset
Beyond the safety hazards, the locals were highkey offended. The beach isn't just a photo op; it’s home to historic cemeteries and a heiau, which are super culturally significant. Resident Giselle Davidson called out the behavior as a blatant grab for attention that completely ignored the respect the land deserves. The internet was equally brutal, with commenters pointing out that this is exactly why some locals are over the tourism surge.
After the heat turned up, Abdullah posted a second video apologizing to Native Hawaiians for the disrespect. However, she kept it real with the trolls in her comments, telling those sending threats they could "go to hell."
Potential Consequences
Under Hawaii law, sneaking into a closed state park is no joke—it can lead to a fine of up to $2,000 and even 30 days behind bars. As of now, it's still unclear if the state is going to press charges, but she’s definitely caught some heat for her actions.
Why it matters
This incident is a reminder that travel isn't just about getting the perfect post—it's about respecting the environment and the people who live there. When you ignore safety warnings, you’re not just risking your own life, you're disrespecting local culture. It’s giving main character energy in the worst way possible.
