The math is grim. If you’re living in Northern Ireland, your heating bill is likely hitting your bank account harder than ever. Thanks to the war in Iran, global energy prices have surged, and because the heating oil market there is unregulated, those costs hit your wallet immediately.
According to the Consumer Council NI (CCNI), heating oil is currently about 80% more expensive than it was pre-war. To put that in perspective: 300 litres that used to cost £202 is now setting people back around £347. That’s an extra £146 for the same amount of fuel—real talk, that’s a massive hit to any budget.
The childminder crunch
For local childminders like Rachel Jeffers, the vibes are off. She’s dealing with doubled costs while trying to keep her home warm for the kids she minds. Between the skyrocketing oil prices and rising grocery and insurance bills, she’s in a tough spot. She’s even had to consider cutting after-school activities like piano and football for her own kids because the cash flow just isn't there. "It's a severe financial and operational burden," Jeffers noted.
Is there a fix?
If you’re struggling, check if you qualify for the Home Heating Oil Support Scheme. Lower-income households (combined income of £30,000 or less or those on certain benefits) can apply for a £100 voucher. Applications are open until March 2027, and so far, over 120,000 people have applied.
Raymond Gormley from the CCNI says the future of your heating bill is basically tied to the Middle East. If peace talks gain traction, prices might drop, but until then, his advice is to keep a sharp eye on daily price checkers and always shop around with different suppliers to find the best deal.
