The vibes in Northern Ireland are officially off. If you’re living there, get ready for your wallet to take a serious hit: energy bills are skyrocketing right as the weather turns.

The Numbers Game

It’s giving major price hikes. SSE Airtricity, the largest natural gas provider in the region, bumped prices up nearly 19% on Thursday. That’s an extra £172 a year for the average household. Meanwhile, Share Energy is jacking up electricity prices by 12.6%, adding another £129 annually for their customers. Firmus energy is also joining the party with an 8.98% hike for the Ten Towns network area, costing households about £87 more per year.

Why? It’s all about the global supply chain. Wholesale gas prices have effectively doubled since the US and Israel started their conflict with Iran. Raymond Gormley from the Consumer Council warns that other unregulated suppliers are likely to follow suit.

Who’s Getting Hit The Hardest?

Real talk: this is crushing people who are already at their limit.

  • Families: Moms like Lucy Kells, currently on maternity leave in east Belfast, say the math just isn't mathing anymore. People are literally camping out in public libraries all day just to stay warm for free.
  • Students: Ryan McStay, a final-year student, was so shocked by a 12.5% hike in his energy bills that he’s already planning to move abroad after graduation because the local cost of living is unsustainable.
  • The Vulnerable: Hospice nurse Naomi Campbell says patients with terminal illnesses are facing the worst of it. They need heat and medical devices that suck power, but many are skipping essential care just to keep the lights on. Marie Curie is now pushing for a "social tariff" to protect them.

Is There Any Relief?

It’s not all Ls. Households will automatically get a £63 credit on their electricity bills starting this month. If you use a pay-as-you-go meter, just don’t top up more than £112 at once, or your meter might not be able to process the full credit in one go. Also, if you use home heating oil—which two-thirds of NI homes rely on—prices have more than doubled since last year. There is a £100 voucher scheme for some users, but you’ll need to apply.

Why it matters

When basic utilities become a luxury, it ruins your financial runway. Whether you're a student, a parent, or someone managing health needs, these price surges make it impossible to save or invest. Keep a close eye on your statements—the cost of living crisis is highkey affecting everything.
