The Incident
A military ATR-42 aircraft crashed into a swamp near a naval base in Ondo State, Nigeria, on Monday morning. The plane, which was on a routine flight from Benin City to Lagos, lost contact with radio operators at 0913 hours. Tragically, all 32 people on board—25 passengers and seven crew members—lost their lives. The site, located near Igbokoda, proved difficult for authorities to access because the wreckage was completely submerged underwater. Local residents reported seeing smoke and finding personal belongings like shoes and clothes scattered at the scene.
Official Response
President Bola Tinubu has declared three days of national mourning to honor those lost, with flags set to fly at half-mast across the country. In a statement, President Tinubu noted that the military personnel were working to secure Nigeria, adding, "Their sacrifice will never be forgotten." Aviation Minister Festus Keyamo confirmed the plane’s tail number was NGR 931. The government has ordered a full investigation by the Air Force to determine what went wrong and prevent future accidents. The names of the deceased are being withheld until all families have been properly notified.
Why it matters
This is one of the deadliest aviation disasters in recent Nigerian history. The Nigerian Air Force is a central pillar in the country’s ongoing efforts to maintain security and combat armed groups, making the loss of personnel and aircraft a significant blow to the nation’s defense operations.
