The San Francisco 49ers are officially entering their villain era regarding the injury report. Star defensive end Nick Bosa went down with a calf injury during practice this week, and the news is mid at best: he’s expected to be out for multiple weeks, according to the NFL Network.

The Fallout

Bosa sat out Wednesday and Thursday practice and won't suit up for this week's game against the Arizona Cardinals. It’s still up in the air if the team will move him to injured reserve, which would force him to miss at least four games. If he hits IR, he'll be forced to watch the squad face the Cardinals, Denver Broncos, Seattle Seahawks, and Washington Commanders from the sidelines.

This is a brutal blow for an already banged-up defensive line. Defensive tackle Alfred Collins is done for the season with a torn patellar tendon, while Sam Okuayinonu and CJ West are currently on IR. Keion White and Khalid Kareem are holding it down as the only healthy defensive ends left standing.

The Stats

Real talk, Bosa is a absolute beast on the field. Since his 2019 debut, he’s racked up 64.5 sacks, 13 forced fumbles, and two interceptions over 87 games. He’s been a main character for the defense since he was drafted second overall, stacking up DROY, DPOY, and five Pro Bowl nods. After his 2025 season was cut short by a torn ACL in Week 3, the vibes are off for another early exit.

Why it matters

Bosa is the engine of the 49ers' pass rush, and losing him changes the defensive identity entirely. With the injury list growing, the 49ers need their depth players to show out or their start to the season is going to be a major L.
