Real talk: the vibes are off in the New Jersey statehouse. Gov. Mikie Sherrill officially called for her handpicked Lieutenant Governor, Dale Caldwell, to resign by Friday after a bombshell independent investigation confirmed he engaged in sexual harassment and multiple ethics violations.
The receipts
The investigation kicked off back in May after an anonymous complaint landed on the chief ethics officer's desk. The report found that Caldwell made a wildly inappropriate comment to a female staffer about "looking for young sperm" after she told him a friend wasn't interested in a romantic entanglement with him. Investigators didn't buy Caldwell’s denials, labeling his account as not credible. The staffer later reported trying to ghost him at work to avoid future interactions.
But the plot thickens. The probe also flagged two major ethics violations. Caldwell repeatedly brought personal guests to ticketed events without clearance or payment—even doing so the day after he was formally notified he was under investigation. He also used his state email to push for a promotion for a romantic partner, referring to her simply as "my friend" without disclosing their relationship.
Why it matters
Sherrill isn't holding back, calling the situation "extremely troubling" and stating that Caldwell’s behavior revealed a "pattern" that continued despite training. While Caldwell previously claimed the allegations were "false and misleading," the Governor said, "The Lieutenant Governor’s resignation is necessary and in the best interest of New Jersey residents." This is giving major "clean house" energy as Sherrill looks to distance her administration from the misconduct.
