New concerns as Covid vaccines for kids are held back in 11 states

Access blocked for millions

The Trump administration is currently withholding Covid-19 vaccines for children across at least 11 states and one US territory. The policy impacts the Vaccines for Children (VFC) program, a vital federal initiative that provides immunizations to more than half of all children in the country. Because the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) has not released these vaccines through the VFC, families in "universal" states—where the state purchases vaccines for all children regardless of insurance status—are facing major roadblocks to getting their kids protected.

The states affected include Alaska, Connecticut, Hawaii, Maine, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, New Mexico, Rhode Island, Vermont, Washington, and Wyoming. Currently, officials have not provided a timeline for when these shots might become available, leaving parents and healthcare providers in the dark.

Why experts are worried

Public health experts warn that this is more than just a temporary delay; they see it as part of a broader strategy to restrict vaccine access. Daniel Jernigan, the former director of the National Center for Emerging and Zoonotic Infectious Diseases at the CDC, described the move as “death by a thousand cuts,” suggesting the administration is testing how easily it can limit access to other routine immunizations as well.

While HHS spokesperson Emily Hilliard stated that the CDC is “finalizing decisions” on procurement, she did not address how this delay affects universal purchase states. Meanwhile, health officials emphasize that vaccination is critical for infants, who face some of the highest Covid hospitalization rates outside of the senior population. By withholding the latest shots, critics argue the government is failing to protect those most vulnerable to severe disease.
