Keeping it green

The National Trust for Jersey is making moves to protect local nature. They’ve announced plans to buy land near Maupertuis Farm in the parish of St Clement, a super built-up area where keeping nature alive is lowkey a mission.

What’s a 'green lung'?

If you're wondering what the tea is with the term 'green lung,' it basically refers to patches of parks, fields, or natural vegetation tucked inside city-like environments. These spots are major Ws because they give wildlife a place to exist and actually help cut down on pollution.

Why it matters

Alan Le Maistre, the Chief Executive, said that these green spaces are becoming 'ever more precious' as the island gets more crowded. Protecting them isn't just about the plants—it’s about keeping the area’s agricultural heritage intact for everyone. The Trust, which just hit its 90th anniversary this past August, is already managing about 1,800 vergées of land. They managed to raise £50,000 in just over a month back in 2021 for a different field nearby, and they’re asking anyone who wants to help with this new purchase to hit them up directly.
