The Postseason Momentum
MLB playoff baseball is officially back. Winning Game 1 of a best-of-five Division Series is a major W, statistically giving teams a 73% chance of moving on. Saturday kicked off with four matchups, and we saw some absolute heaters and some major Ls.
Rays Ace Rasmussen Shuts Down the Bronx
Drew Rasmussen was locked in. The Tampa Bay pitcher went into the eighth inning with a no-hitter against the Yankees. He racked up 10 strikeouts—tying a Rays postseason record—with a 43% swing-and-miss rate. He was essentially untouchable for most of the day.
The Austin Wells Blunder
In the eighth, Yankees catcher Austin Wells finally broke up the no-hitter with a double. But then, he made a move that had everyone questioning the vibes. Despite a clear stop sign from third base coach Luis Rojas, Wells tried to stretch it into a triple. He was thrown out, killing the momentum in a one-run game. "Obviously, would love to be safe there," Wells told reporters afterward. It was a rough look for the Yankees’ offense.
Dodgers and White Sox Shine
Teoscar Hernández continued his postseason dominance for the Dodgers, crushing his 11th career playoff home run to help take a 2-0 lead. Plus, Tarik Skubal dominated on the mound for LA, striking out seven in six innings of work. Over in the AL, Munetaka Murakami delivered for the White Sox, launching a 440-foot bomb to secure a win against the Guardians. The Guardians had their chances, but they couldn't capitalize on bases-loaded opportunities, and that mistake cost them the game.
Why it matters
Winning Game 1 sets the pace for the entire series. With the Rays, Dodgers, and White Sox taking early leads, the pressure is now on the Yankees, Guardians, and their opponents to bounce back before they find themselves facing a sweep.
