The arrest 20 years later

It’s a massive break in a mystery that has haunted Indiana for two decades. Michael Jerome James, 35, was taken into custody at his Shelbyville home this past Friday. He is now facing two counts of murder for the 2006 deaths of 26-year-old Chynna Dickus and her 10-year-old stepson, Blake Dickus.

What happened in 2006

In July 2006, the victims were discovered by Blake’s father, Sean Dickus, after he returned home from work. The scene was horrific: Chynna had been stabbed to death, while young Blake had been knifed, beaten, and suffocated.

The legal path forward

James was only 14 at the time of the killings, but Johnson County prosecutor Lance Hamner confirmed he will be tried as an adult. A grand jury indicted the suspect after a three-week review of evidence. While officials haven’t specified exactly what connected James to the scene, they confirmed they aren't looking for any other suspects. The arrest follows a major push for answers, including a recent quadrupling of the reward money to $100,000.

Why it matters

This case lowkey defines 'cold case' persistence. Franklin Police Chief Kirby Cochran emphasized that investigators never stopped working the case, finally providing some closure to a family that has been waiting two decades for justice. While the motive remains a total mystery, the fact that an arrest was made after 20 years is a huge W for the investigation team.
