The Muse Effect

Wall Street is lowkey spiraling right now, and it’s all because of Meta’s new AI agent, Muse. Since its launch on September 8, the app has been absolutely killing it, racking up nearly 1 million downloads in just six days. As of Monday, it held the top spot for free apps on both the Apple App Store and Google Play, blowing past competitors like ChatGPT and Claude.

Investors are highkey worried that Muse is about to disrupt the entire financial industry. The bot isn't just for chatting; it’s designed to handle routine tasks like filling out forms, cleaning out your inbox, and—most importantly for the market—managing personal finances.

The Financial Fallout

This growth is hitting the bottom line for the big players. On Wednesday, financial firms took a major L. Charles Schwab, LPL Financial, Raymond James, and Ameriprise Financial all saw their stocks drop by between 0.8% and 1.9%. The giants of Wall Street weren't spared either; JPMorgan, Bank of America, and Goldman Sachs saw slumps as well.

Mark White, a wealth advisor at Mark White Wealth Advisors, noted that the real fear is consumers ditching human pros for AI. "Investors are worried that AI assistants could become the first place consumers go for financial information and routine transactions," White said. If that happens, firms will have to hustle way harder to keep customers, meaning more spend on marketing and a major shift in how they handle fees and service.

Why the Plot Thickens

What makes Muse extra dangerous compared to other AI tools is Meta’s massive footprint. With built-in partnerships like PayPal and Plaid—not to mention access to users across Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp—the potential for scale is massive. Scott Martin, a partner at Kingsview Wealth Management, put it bluntly: "The wild fear is that if an AI bot can constantly shop for better rates or move customers to another deal in seconds, customer loyalty becomes a faded memory."

Despite the panic, it’s not all doom and gloom. Some experts say the traditional industry could bounce back if they pivot fast and adopt this tech to lower their own costs and improve service. Plus, there’s still the trust factor—most people probably aren't ready to hand over their entire life savings to a bot when the stakes are high.

Why it matters

If you use an advisor, it’s giving a major shift in the industry landscape. If Muse succeeds in becoming your personal finance manager, banks will have to fight much harder for your business, which could change the fees you pay and the services you get. Keep an eye on your portfolio, because the "AI vs. Human" debate is officially hitting your wallet.
