Prosecutors say Lee Reiber, who served as the CEO of Virginia-based Oxygen Forensics, helped conceal that the tech firm was actually owned and run by Russian nationals. This allowed the company to keep scoring federal contracts worth over $2 million—including deals with the Secret Service.

According to the Justice Department, Reiber told government agencies that Oxygen had zero foreign ownership and that their tech was built in the U.S. In reality? Five Russian nationals reportedly held the strings through a Cyprus-based holding company, with the actual software development happening in Russia. One of those alleged owners, 52-year-old Oleg Sergeyevich Davydov, was cuffed at London’s Heathrow Airport last Sunday alongside Reiber’s arrest in Idaho.

Security is literally everything, and this story is lowkey terrifying because Oxygen’s tools were used by the Secret Service and other federal agencies. The Secret Service confirmed they cut ties back in February after identifying security risks. Reiber allegedly even bragged about needing to keep these Russian ties hidden, writing in an email that public exposure would "destroy this entire opportunity."
