The robots have entered the chat

California’s highways have a new resident, and it's not looking for a snack break. Kodiak AI and Fresno-based DTL Transport officially kicked off a pilot program on September 22, putting autonomous big rigs to work hauling produce.

These rigs are currently running a 225-mile route from Fresno to a distribution center in Los Angeles, hitting major arteries like State Route 99 and Interstate 5. It’s highkey a massive pivot for logistics, but for now, they aren't fully ghost-mode. A human safety driver is still required to chill in the cab and keep watch.

The roadmap to full autonomy

This experiment is happening because California opened up public roads to heavy-duty autonomous testing. Kodiak snagged its permit back on August 13, but don’t expect to see empty cabs just yet. The state requires companies to clock at least 500,000 miles with a safety driver before they can even apply for full commercial deployment.

For DTL, this is all about the numbers. CEO Lucky Dosanjh stated that the pilot is testing if these trucks can boost safety and improve margins while keeping produce fresh. Kodiak founder Don Burnette noted that the state's regulatory framework is a "major unlock" for freight innovation.

The competition

It’s giving a crowded space. Kodiak isn't the only player; Aurora Innovation is already testing systems with safety drivers, while Gatik AI is focusing on shorter "middle-mile" routes. PlusAI is also in the mix with software designed to upgrade existing fleet trucks. With big names like Tesla, Waymo, and Amazon’s Zoox already running passenger-focused tests, the state is becoming a massive lab for autonomous tech.
