The situation
Kimberly Guilfoyle, the U.S. Ambassador to Greece, is currently dealing with some major heat. A recent Wall Street Journal report claims that before she took her current post, she allegedly asked a top donor to President Donald Trump to clear a $100,000 credit card bill. The allegation suggests she pushed for the payment to be made directly to the credit card company without leaving a paper trail, supposedly offering access to top administration officials as a sweetener. The donor, Eric Deters, claims he never actually paid up.
The fallout
Things are looking pretty rocky for her right now. Senate Majority Whip John Barrasso (R-Wyo.) went on "Face the Nation" and said, "what we’ve seen in the reports is very troubling, it’s concerning." He added that he expects an investigation, noting, "I know the Senate Foreign Relations Committee will have oversight and look into that, as well."
This isn't the only probe she's facing. The State Department’s Office of Inspector General is already looking into separate allegations involving her lifestyle in Greece, claims of mistreatment of staff, substance abuse, and improper gift acceptance.
The mood in D.C.
It’s giving major tension. Reports suggest that both President Trump and Secretary of State Marco Rubio are less than thrilled. While Secretary Rubio pushed back against the media’s reporting, calling it "not the gospel," there is highkey speculation that her days as ambassador could be numbered.
Why it matters
When a high-ranking diplomat gets hit with allegations of influence peddling, it becomes a massive L for the current administration’s optics. If the Senate Foreign Relations Committee digs in, the plot thickens for the State Department, and we could see a major shake-up in Greece sooner rather than later.
