The real tea on the Bend shooting
We finally have a name for the bystander who stopped the tragic rampage at Silver Rail Elementary in Bend, Oregon. Kaylub Giamanco, a lifelong local and father of two girls at the school, has stepped forward as the individual who ended the threat.
Police confirmed that Giamanco pursued the 16-year-old attacker, identified by law enforcement as John Griffin, and fatally shot him. According to Bend Police Chief Mike Krantz, Griffin entered the school by firing at locked doors. He used a shotgun that police say was purchased by his mother.
The aftermath
The scene left behind was heartbreaking. By the time police arrived, four people—three children ages 5, 8, and 11, and a teacher—had lost their lives. Two others, another student and teacher, remain hospitalized with critical injuries.
President Trump publicly praised Giamanco on Friday, calling him a “great hero” and saying, “Thank God we had him; otherwise, it would have been much worse.”
In a statement, Giamanco’s family shared that he isn’t looking for any clout or recognition. They asked for privacy and stated that Giamanco is simply focused on thanking the first responders and the community for their support during this devastating time.
Why it matters
This is a heavy reminder of how quickly a community can be changed by gun violence. While Giamanco's actions prevented further loss of life, it’s a grim situation that has left a town reeling. For you, it underscores the ongoing, high-stakes conversation about school safety and how these tragedies continue to hit close to home.
