The shakeup in the West Wing

The White House has officially found its new point person for Congress, and the timing is everything. President Trump has tapped Katie Bailey to step in as the director of the Office of Legislative Affairs, according to multiple sources. She reportedly accepted the offer on Friday.

Who is the new hire?

Bailey isn't exactly the new kid on the block. She’s already deep in the mix as a special assistant to the president and deputy director of legislative affairs. Before this gig, she worked as the legislative director for Indiana Republican Sen. Mike Braun during his six-year term, which wrapped up when he became governor in January 2025.

She is stepping into the shoes of James Braid, who dipped from the role last month. Vice President JD Vance gave Braid his flowers on his way out, shouting out his work on the administration’s big wins—including that massive tax cut, the immigration agenda, and the recent landmark crypto bill.

Why it matters

This is high-stakes stuff, no cap. We are less than a month out from the midterm elections, and the control of both the House and the Senate is lowkey hanging by a thread. With Republicans holding a slim majority, Bailey is stepping into a pressure cooker where every single vote counts for the administration’s final push before the midterms. It’s giving main character energy in the most stressful way possible.
