The trader years

Real talk: Hollywood is a brutal grind. Before becoming an A-lister, Josh Brolin spent years in the trenches where the vibe was definitely off. After his early hit The Goonies, Brolin said he spent years struggling to land roles. With his acting career stalling, he pivoted to something else entirely: day trading.

Brolin, now 58, opened up to Theo Von on his podcast, revealing he spent nearly five years working full-time as a stock trader. He wasn't just dabbling—he was locked in with a three-screen setup and four tabs per monitor. And the numbers? They were actually wild. Brolin admitted he cleared more cash in those four years than he had during 20 years of acting.

The acting reality check

It wasn’t until 2007’s No Country for Old Men that his career finally popped off. Before that, his acting income was lowkey non-existent. Even after scoring a lead role in an Oscar-winning film, he says he only cleared about $30,000 after taxes. That’s definitely not the Hollywood pay-day you’d expect.

Since then, the actor has moved on to bigger things, including his current thriller Whalefall, where he plays the estranged father of a diver. But it’s a major flex that he kept his finances in check during the dry spells by mastering the market. Talk about having a side hustle that actually pays the bills.

Why it matters

It’s a classic reminder that the "starving artist" life is real, even for the people you see on the big screen. Brolin’s pivot to trading shows the importance of having a backup plan—or in his case, a primary income stream—when your main career hasn't quite scaled yet. Sometimes the best financial move is knowing when to diversify.
