The results are in
New York State Democratic Party members have spoken, and Jay Jacobs is officially staying on as party chairman. Despite a push from some insiders who wanted him out, Jacobs secured a massive 82% of the vote at the party committee meeting in Tarrytown this past Thursday.
His challenger, Otsego County Democratic Party Chair Caitlin Ogden, trailed significantly with 14% of the vote, while about 4% of members abstained. This victory grants Jacobs another two-year term, keeping him at the helm as the party prepares for upcoming elections.
The drama behind the scenes
Why were some people trying to give him the boot? The real tea centers on the NYC mayoral race. Last year, Jacobs refused to endorse Zohran Mamdani, sparking frustration among the party's more progressive wing. The two are lowkey ideological opposites; Jacobs is a moderate and a staunch supporter of Israel, while Mamdani has been vocal in his criticisms of the Jewish State, even calling for the arrest of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.
Jacobs hasn’t shied away from the tension, previously noting that while he and Mamdani share concerns about income inequality, their views on Israel and other key policies are fundamentally misaligned. As a Nassau County Democratic leader who has served across three different gubernatorial administrations, Jacobs represents a traditional moderate force in a party that has highkey been trending leftward with the rise of democratic socialists.
Why it matters
For you, this means the establishment wing of the state party is holding its ground. With Governor Kathy Hochul backing Jacobs, the leadership is signaling a focus on party unity and a 'business as usual' approach to fighting GOP opposition. Jacobs says he’s ready to focus on electing Democrats up and down the ballot, but the friction between the party's moderate leadership and its growing progressive base is definitely a plot line to keep an eye on.
