A bold new look for Jaguar
Jaguar just pulled the cover off the Type 01 in New York, and it’s giving major main character energy. This isn't your grandad's luxury car. The brand is pivoting hard, moving away from its traditional 'men in their 50s' customer base to target rich tech-literate buyers in the US. We're talking 1,000 horsepower and a 400-mile range—it’s a massive flex.
Why the redesign?
Real talk: the company has been struggling. Between tough competition from Chinese manufacturers and the fallout from a massive cyber-attack that cost an estimated £1.9bn, Jaguar Land Rover (JLR) needed a win. They’re cutting 4,000 jobs to save £1.7bn, and their plan to stay afloat involves doubling down on luxury. By bumping the starting price to £130,000 (roughly $172,000), they’re hoping to stop fighting for space in the crowded premium market.
Not for the UK streets
Lowkey, this car is a nightmare for the UK. At over 5.2 metres long and 2 metres wide, it won't even fit in a standard 4.8 metre British parking space. It’s got no rear window—just a camera—and it’s clearly designed for the wide-open American lifestyle, not narrow country lanes. Jaguar managing director Rawdon Glover even mentioned they could have launched in Silicon Valley, where Nvidia boss Jensen Huang already took a prototype for a spin. They're waiting a few years to bring it to China, even though it's the biggest car market on the planet.
Why it matters
This is a massive gamble for JLR. After a chaotic rebrand that included an ad campaign that got roasted online and a concept car that drew heat from politicians, the company is desperate to land a W. Business secretary Jonathan Reynolds is backing the move, calling it a 'big vote of confidence' in British manufacturing that will support thousands of jobs. Whether this pivot to millionaires and billionaires pays off remains to be seen, but the plot thickens for the future of the brand.
