Real talk: Indonesia’s prison system has been catching heat for years over allegations that rich or well-connected inmates can basically buy their way out of a standard cell. It’s a tale as old as time, but the latest scandal at Cibinong prison near Jakarta is giving 'main character energy' in the worst way possible.
The Discovery
During a surprise inspection on September 23, investigators from the ombudsman stumbled upon a compound that looked more like an Airbnb than a correctional facility. We’re talking about an entire residential area—totally separate from regular cells—featuring over ten units decked out with air conditioning, big-screen TVs, couches, and dining areas.
To make matters even more absurd, investigators found high-end cars and evidence that a gym and a golf simulator were under construction.

Syafrida Rachmawati Rasahan, a member of the ombudsman, confirmed they found inmates living in these 'home stay' style setups. As a direct result, five prison officials—including the Cibinong prison chief—have been suspended. Inspector general of the ministry of immigration and corrections, Rudi Setiawan, says dozens of employees and prisoners are currently being questioned.
While the identities of the inmates living in these boujee units haven't been released, the facility typically houses people convicted of corruption. Authorities are currently looking into whether staff were taking bribes to let inmates live the high life. The buildings were allegedly meant for staff housing, which honestly makes the whole plot twist even messier.
