The Tech Move

Real talk: the future of finance is looking increasingly automated. British banking titan HSBC and Ant Digital Technologies just dropped news that they successfully ran a technical test where AI agents handled micropayments on their own.

Using HSBC’s Tokenised Deposit Service combined with Ant Digital’s Anvita Flow network and the Jovay Testnet (a layer-2 blockchain environment), the setup allowed AI agents to discover services and settle transactions in real time. We’re talking about those tiny "micropayments"—usually clocking in at under $2—that keep digital ecosystems running.

Not a Commercial Flex

Before you go aping in, hold your horses. The companies were very clear: this was just a technical verification. There is no commercial launch or live customer offering here. It is just proof that the tech can handle risk checks and settlement without a human clicking 'confirm' every single time.

The Industry Vibe

Banks are lowkey racing to figure out how to integrate AI agents into their infrastructure. Santander, Sygnum, and CaixaBank have all been running their own experiments lately. But, it’s not all sunshine and rainbows. Skeptics like Augustus Bank CEO Ferdinand Dabitz have argued that legacy banking systems are built for humans, not for 24/7 automated machine traffic.

Citrini Research recently highlighted that if AI agents are going to move programmatically across apps, they need financial rails that actually keep up. They’re betting that blockchain is the infrastructure that will eventually allow money to move at the same speed as the bots.

Why it matters

If this works, it could mean a massive shift toward "programmable money," where your AI assistant handles your subscriptions, service fees, and digital purchases autonomously. Just remember: this is still experimental tech. Don't go bag-holding on future promises—keep your eyes on the dev updates, not the hype.
