A tragic loss in the music world
The idol community is mourning the loss of Hirata Runa, a trainee member of the Japanese girls’ group DIANNA Project. At just 8 years old, Runa has passed away, with her talent agency confirming on Sept. 28 that the cause was myocarditis, a heart condition brought on by the influenza virus.
Remembered as an idol
It’s honestly so devastating—the young star actually performed at a concert just five days before her passing. Keeping that main character energy until the end, she posted a sweet message on X after her show on Sept. 20, writing, “I appreciate it It was so much fun.”
Her family shared a touching message on her account, noting that Runa spent a third of her young life living her dream as an idol. They asked fans to keep her in their hearts as an “eternal idol.” Per her agency, a private wake and funeral have already been held for her immediate family and loved ones. Real talk, the agency has requested that everyone respect the family's privacy and avoid prying for more details.
Why it matters
Myocarditis is a serious inflammation of the heart muscle, and this heartbreaking situation is a stark reminder of how quickly complications from the flu can become life-threatening, even for the young.
