The final moments
New 911 audio has shed light on the tragic death of Hayden Panettiere, the actor famous for her work on Heroes and Nashville. On August 16, Zach Hickerson, the brother of her on-again, off-again boyfriend Brian Hickerson, called emergency services after finding the 36-year-old unconscious at their Greenville, South Carolina, home.
In the call, Zach reported that she appeared to not be breathing. The operator walked him through life-saving instructions, including chest compressions and mouth-to-mouth, until EMS arrived. Brian Hickerson also told TMZ that he administered Narcan to Panettiere after discovering her, but despite "advanced cardiac life support measures," she was pronounced dead at the scene.
The cause of death
An autopsy officially ruled her death an accident. The coroner determined the cause was the "toxic effects" of a mix of drugs, specifically fentanyl, 4-ANPP, alprazolam, methocarbamol, and quetiapine.
A legacy of honesty
Panettiere had been real talk with her fans for years regarding her struggles with substance abuse, which she previously shared began when she was a teenager. She was candid about her journey through addiction, postpartum depression, and abuse—topics she explored in her 2026 memoir, This Is Me: A Reckoning.
As recently as May, she sat down with Gayle King for CBS News to discuss her recovery, telling the world that it was okay to be imperfect and that she was "healthier than I've been in a long time." Her goal, she noted, was to make others feel less afraid to live their own truths.
Why it matters
Hayden Panettiere’s death is a heartbreaking reminder of the dangers of accidental overdose. By speaking so openly about her journey, she highkey paved the way for more honest conversations around recovery and mental health, leaving an impact that continues to resonate with anyone struggling to find their way.
