If you’re tired of watching your bank account drain every time you hit the petrol station, Google Maps is finally stepping up. Starting today, the app is rolling out a new feature that displays real-time fuel prices directly in your navigation view and search results.

The Money Breakdown

It’s giving major savings energy, but here’s the reality: fuel prices have been absolutely brutal lately, with diesel recently hitting the £2 per litre mark—a threshold the RAC’s policy head Simon Williams called a "price threshold no one wanted to cross." While diesel has dipped slightly by 2p, a 55-litre tank is still costing you a painful £110 for diesel or £96 for petrol.

How it Works

Google is pulling this data from the government’s "Fuel Finder" scheme, which legally mandates that UK forecourts update their prices within 30 minutes of any change. Since Google Maps is the go-to navigation tool for 77% of UK adults, this is a massive W for anyone trying to optimize their travel budget.

The Accuracy Catch

Before you go full main character mode and trust the app blindly, keep it real: the data isn't perfect yet. Clare Lafferty, director at PetrolPrices, warned that some stations aren't consistently updating their info, with 200 sites failing to report accurate diesel pricing in September alone. Google is aware of the vibes, so Sarah-Jayne Williams, director of product partnerships, noted they’ll independently vet the numbers. If they don't have "high confidence" that the price is fresh, they just won't show it at all.

Why it matters

Inflation is still holding your wallet hostage, and with global oil volatility sparked by conflicts in Ukraine and the Middle East, every pound saved at the pump adds up. Whether you're commuting or road-tripping, using these tools is a low-key way to keep your monthly budget from spiraling.
