The situation

If you’re a fan of the 28oz Gatorade bottles, listen up. PepsiCo has issued a voluntary class II recall for about 122,000 cases of their sports drinks across 37 states. The issue? Some bottles contain "undeclared" food dyes, specifically Yellow No. 5 and Yellow No. 6. Lowkey, that’s not ideal for anyone with sensitivities to those ingredients.

Which bottles are affected?

The recall covers 28oz bottles of the following varieties:

  • Gatorade Lemon Lime
  • Gatorade Lime Zero
  • Gatorade Orange
  • Gatorade Orange Zero

According to the FDA, the recall started on September 25. The class II classification means that while there is a risk of temporary or medically reversible health issues, the chance of anything super serious is pretty remote. Still, it’s giving a major L for quality control.

Where is this happening?

This is a widespread issue, affecting a long list of states including California, Florida, New York, Texas, and 33 others. As of now, it's unclear if you can get a refund for your stash, so you might want to hold onto your receipts if you’re looking to get your money back.

Why it matters

This comes at a weird time for the FDA, which has been dealing with major drama lately, including a nearly 20% staff reduction. Real talk, when the agencies supposed to keep our food and drinks safe are facing internal chaos, it’s just another reminder to stay vigilant about what we’re consuming.
