It’s been a rough week for the Garces Memorial High Rams. The Bakersfield football powerhouse just had their season flipped upside down after the California Interscholastic Federation (CIF) Central Section dropped a bombshell ruling on their eligibility status.
Two star players, brothers Carter and Bryce Hanson, were initially cleared to play back in August after a "valid change of residency" following their transfer from Liberty High School. But on Monday, the CIF reversed that call, officially denying their eligibility for the rest of the season. The fallout? The Rams had to forfeit four of their five wins, turning their record from a clean slate into a lowkey dismal 1–5.
The star power sidelined
Carter Hanson, a junior running back, is majorly hyped, holding offers from over a dozen D1 programs like UCLA, Oregon, and Texas Tech. He’s been a beast on the field, racking up 400 yards and five touchdowns this year. His brother Bryce, a senior defensive back committed to Southern Utah, has also been a key part of the defense. Now, both are stuck on the sidelines.
Per CIF Bylaw 202, any team found using ineligible players—or relying on inaccurate info regarding transfers—has to vacate those games. The Rams had to give up their Ws against Tehachapi, Wasco, Fresno-San Joaquin Memorial, and North.
Moving forward
The team actually showed some main character energy this past Friday, pulling off a 20–16 win against Bakersfield High even without the brothers. Despite the record hit, they’re still grinding, with a game against Centennial coming up this Thursday.
It’s a massive L for the squad, especially since the CIF hasn’t publicly spilled the tea on exactly what information prompted the sudden reversal. Real talk: the pressure to follow transfer rules is high, and for the Rams, it just cost them half their season.
Why it matters
This case highlights just how strict high school sports transfer regulations are in California. When eligibility rules are breached—even accidentally—the consequences for team records and student-athlete careers can be immediate and devastating.
