The Incident
It’s giving absolute nightmare fuel. Earlier this week, a FlyDubai flight bound for Tel Aviv went into a terrifying nose-dive after the co-pilot allegedly attacked his captain mid-flight. Capt. Smit Machchhar, who survived the ordeal, stated he was essentially fighting for his life to keep the plane stable after being stabbed with the cockpit's emergency 'crash axe.'
The Attacker
The co-pilot has been identified as 29-year-old Hamam al-Hammami. According to reports, al-Hammami was previously banned from flying for Oman Air back in 2024 due to red flags regarding extremist views. Sources suggest he later moved to Dubai, and somehow, FlyDubai didn't flag the incident with his previous employer during the hiring process. The vibes are clearly off, as investigators are now scrambling to figure out if this was a 'lone wolf' situation or part of a larger network.
The Aftermath
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu didn't mince words on Friday, straight-up labeling the attack an act of terrorism. He claimed the co-pilot’s intent was to crash the plane with passengers on board. After the plane lost altitude, passengers reportedly stepped up to help seize control before the aircraft made an emergency landing in Saudi Arabia. Real talk, this is a major W for the passengers who stayed calm under pressure.
Why it matters
The UAE is currently leading an investigation into how a pilot with such a documented background was able to get into the cockpit in the first place. It’s a massive security L that has people questioning international pilot vetting standards.
